Master John A. Johnson (PhD), VII Dan

DR. JOHN A. JOHNSON (VII dan) is a student of Grandmaster Gordon Jue, Vice President of the US-ITF. Dr. Johnson lived in South Korea from 1999-2021 and has spent over four decades studying Korean martial arts. He was an assistant professor in the Department of Taekwondo at Keimyung University (Daegu, South Korea). He is one of only five non-Koreans to hold the title of Taekwon-Do professor in Korea and is the only ITF practitioner to teach at a Kukkiwon-aligned university. He earned his PhD in Physical Education from Kyung Hee University, and he followed in the tradition of South Korean university graduates by naming his American dojang (martial arts school) after his alma mater. Dr. Johnson’s academic research centers on the intersection of Taekwon-Do international relations, pedagogy, philosophy, and history. He has published over four dozen articles on Taekwon-Do in highly ranked, international academic journals, and he has presented at numerous academic conferences in Russia, Poland, the Czech Republic, Mexico, Portugal, Malaysia, South Korea, and the USA. In 2015, he taught courses for the World Taekwondo Federation/Kyung Hee University Partnership Athlete, Coach, and Youth Programs – the only ITF practitioner to have ever done so. While at Keimyung University, he taught courses such as “Taekwon-Do International Relations,” “ITF Taekwon-Do Pattern Theory,” “Taekwon-Do Literature,” “Taekwon-Do Practical English” as well as physical ITF Taekwon-Do classes to South Korean undergraduate students. He has taught ITF Taekwon-Do classes in Thailand, South Korea, Poland, and the USA, and he has run dojangs in South Korea and the USA. Dr. Johnson is a co-founder and the Vice President of International Center for Academic Taekwondo (iACT), a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting research on Taekwon-Do. Dr. Johnson runs Kyung Hee Martial Arts through the Maize Recreation Commission in Maize, KS. Although now living in Wichita, Kansas and working as a high school English teacher, he continues to teach Taekwon-Do and serve on other boards of international academic organizations.
